'War changes you fundamentally': PTSD affects 1 in 5 veterans of Iraq, Afghanistan

EUGENE, Ore. - Veterans Day isn't just about honoring veterans.

Clifford Cole said the day symbolized the support society owes to veterans returning home from war.

"For us, it's difficult for us to transition into this reality when we spent so long in that reality," Cole said. "War changes you fundamentally. You go through something every day, all day long. It's not like going to work 8 hours a day - you go to work for 24 hours a day."

According to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 1 in 5 soldiers returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.

And for many, returning to society is more than they can manage. There are an estimated 60,000 homeless veterans living on the streets of the United States, according to the Veterans Administration.
