SALEM, Ore. - Smoking would be restricted to cars, tents and RVs, plus campsites in developed overnight camping areas, under a proposed rule for Oregon State Parks.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is seeking public comment on proposed rule changes through January 17 at 5 p.m.

If approved, the rules would take effect March 1. Enforcement would start Jan. 1, 2015, after a warning period.

The proposed changes, which can be found at, are designed in part to reduce litter and protect natural resources in Oregon's state parks, the department said.

Smoking is already prohibited in public buildings in the parks.

Public hearings were held last week on Tuesday in Grants Pass and Thursday in St. Paul. Hearings are set this week in Bend and Newport on Tuesday and Thursday.
