Springfield PD: Driver high on pot hits 15-year-old riding bike

      SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Police officials say a man was driving stoned late Saturday night when he struck a 15-year-old boy who was riding his bike on Main Street in Springfield.

      The teenager was taken to Riverbend Hospital with minor injuries.

      Springfield Police received a call about a vehicle vs. bike crash at the crosswalk near 51st and Main Street at around 11:15 p.m. Saturday.

      According to a police report, the teenager was riding his bike in circles on Main Street near the crosswalk. The crosswalk warning lights were not flashing, officials said.

      Officers said Jake Walsh, 36, of Springfield was driving east on Main St. when he struck the 15-year-old with his car.

      Paramedics were taking the boy to the hospital when officers arrived on-scene.

      Officers suspected Walsh was under the influence and called over a drug recognition expert from the Eugene Police Department. Tests confirmed that Walsh was under the influence of marijuana, Springfield Police said.

      He was booked into the Springfield Municipal Jail for driving under the influence of intoxicants - cannabis.
