Sheriff: Oakridge man arrested for shooting toward police officer

      OAKRIDGE, Ore. - Police surrounded a home in Oakridge after a police officer reported hearing a gunshot just before noon on Friday while he tried to contact a man inside, Oregon State Police said.

      Deputies arrested 55-year-old Kelly Zang for unlawful use of a weapon after a two-hour standoff at the house.

      Lane County Sheriff's Sgt. Steve french said the incident started at around 11:55 a.m. Friday when an Oakridge police officer conducted a welfare check at Zang's home on River Road.

      The officer called for backup after someone inside the house fired a shot in his direction, sheriff's officials reported.

      State troopers and sheriff's deputies were called out to the scene to help Oakridge Police, Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said. Calls to the newsroom reported seeing a SWAT team also arrive.

      At about 1:55 p.m., Lane County Sheriff's Deputies used an armored vehicle to move up to Zang's house. Police said Zang surrendered shortly after deputies inside the vehicle ordered him to do so.

      Zang was arrested and booked into the Lane County Jail on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon.
