EUGENE, Ore. - The duo in uniform rolls into the parking lot at Spencer Butte Park in a marked patrol car, working their beat.

      But they aren't police officers.

      They're volunteers.

      They're retired.

They're the Seniors on Patrol, part of the Volunteers in Policing Program.

The volunteers pitch in to help the Eugene Police Department patrol public parks, malls and downtown.

If they notice you left something valuable in plain sight in your car, they'll send you a letter reminding you to take care to hide items that might invite someone to break into your vehicle.

They also check on homes that have request vacation checks from police.

The volunteers call it a nice way to give back to the community and help keep people safe.
