Scout troop funds trip collecting trees: 'The Christmas trees will be composted'

EUGENE, Ore. -- While many people will keep their tree up for a week or so after Christmas, the yuletide memorial could soon become a burden when looking for proper place to dispose of it.

One such outlet would be contacting Eugene's Boy Scout Troop 100, which is putting in some hard work collecting Christmas trees after the holidays. They are charging $5 a tree, raising money for a trip to Philmont Ranch in New Mexico.

Brady Gough of Troop 100 said the annual trip is a big part of their Boy Scout tradition.

"I've been there twice," said Gough. "We do 12-day backpacking trip and, you know, there are costs involved cost of the program. Food, airfare... It all adds up."

Boy Scout Nick Eichner said all the trees go to Lane Forest Products to be recycled.

"The Christmas trees will be composted and become mulch (to be) used as your garden mulch or other bark materials," said Eichner.

Troop 100 is charging $5 per tree, including flocked trees. Call 541-342-1115 or email the troop leaders at to schedule a pickup.
