Report: Girls outperform boys at school

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - New state report cards show that female students in Eugene and Springfield schools outperform male students in nearly every academic category.

Girls are also more likely to graduate from high school and have lower drop out rates than boys.

Boys still do better than girls in one academic subject: science.

Devon Ashbridge with the Springfield School District said instead of focusing on the gender gap, schools need to focus on each student's individual needs.

"We need to be focusing on literacy when we are at the elementary level and making sure that not only girls but boys are reading grade level by 3rd grade," Ashbridge said. "That sets the stage for achievement later but really it's all about focusing on individual students and helping them be successful regardless of their gender."
