Police: Armed man tried to nab teen girl

WINSTON, Ore. -- A Winston teen got a scare Sunday morning, when police say a man with a gun tried to get her into his pickup.

According to Corporal Mike Miller of the Winston Police Department, the girl was walking in the 100 block of Cary Street at about 8:45 am, when a white Toyota pickup pulled alongside her.

The driver told her to get in the truck, and when she refused he pointed a 9mm handgun at her, police said. "When she said 'No' again, he pulled a gun on her, and then told her to get into the truck. At that point, she took off running and the truck took off," Miller said.

After an investigation, Winston police say they arrested Brandon Derek Tidwell, 28, of Winston.

Authorities charged Tidwell with first degree kidnapping and unlawful use of a weapon, among other charges.

Tidwell was lodged in the Douglas County Jail, and is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon.

Miller says that kids and teens should never walk around alone. "The best thing I would say, is to never walk alone. Always be with a friend if you're out walking around, even in the daylight," he said.
