Need help heating your home? Sign up - and wait

EUGENE, Ore. - Need help paying your energy bills? Starting November 1, Lane Country residents can sign up for help with their energy costs.

When that help - and whether you are eligible - remains to be seen.

The low-income home energy assistance program, or LIHEAP, is federally funded.

Last year, almost 8,000 Lane County residents received support.

County officials hope for similar numbers this year, but many questions are still unanswered.

"We don't have any funding yet for this year's program. We don't know how much we're going to get, and we don't know when we're going to get it," said Mary Ellen Bennett with Lane County.

Several non-profit and senior agencies administer the program. Based on conservative estimates of funding, these organizations will determine when to close waiting lists.
