EUGENE, Ore. -- After Thursday's defeat at Stanford, Duck fans had a very somber trip home from Palo Alto. However, one lucky Duck said his ride home was
Dan Kane traveled to watch the game in Stanford while his girlfriend, Shaylie Gibbons, watched from home in Glide. He said that he had another reason to make the trip.
Dan planned to propose to Shaylie on national TV.
"He made it very clear that he wanted me to watch the game. He was very adamant all week that I watch it," said Gibbons.
Shaylie said seeing the Ducks lose to Stanford wasn't her only disappointment Thursday evening.
"The game came on and I didn't see anything and I was just kind of bummed out," she said.
"You couldn't bring signs in and, you know, I really had no other game plan. I just had determination," Dan said. "I went there and stood in front of the stadium with my sign."
That's when Shaylie's friend showed her a post-game news report online.
"My friend had the news from San Francisco playing on her phone, and it was him proposing to me!" she said.
After Kane made the 12 hour train ride back to Eugene, Gibbons was waiting with a message of her own.
A sign simply reading "Yes."
"He's a really wonderful man and he's done a lot of great stuff for me already in just the year that he's been here for me and my girls," said Shaylie. "I'm just very happy that he's in my life."
Shaylie and Dan haven't set a date for the wedding, but say the plan for their family is to continue to grow and love one another.
