EUGENE, Ore. - Snow returned Friday, and forecasters extended the Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. Saturday.

Earlier forecasts held more promise that the snow would turn to rain by Saturday.

Instead, National Weather Service forecasters now see heavy snow transitioning to sleet or freezing rain Friday night or Saturday morning.

      But first: more snow.

"Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are likely by tonight," forecasters said Friday morning. "Up to one half inch of ice is expected in some areas tonight and Saturday."

The ice could prove problematic for a number of reasons.

"Roads will be snow covered and icy, including Interstate 5," forecasters said. "Downed tree limbs and power outages will become increasingly likely tonight and Saturday as precipitation changes to freezing rain.

"Residents in this area should be prepared for power outages that could last several hours or longer."
