III.  RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES

TYPE OF RECRUITMENT INITIATIVE
(MENU SELECTION)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY

1

Participate in Job Fair

On February 13, 2007, our SEU participated in Lane County’s Youth Career Fair, “Passport to the 21st Century,” designed to provide Lane County youth a safe, non-threatening venue to explore career paths and opportunities.  Lane County employers, job training organizations and educational institutions provided an estimated 2,000 area high school students an opportunity to connect with their future workforce at the Lane Events Center (Lane County Fairgrounds) in Eugene, Oregon.

SEU participants – our regional vice president/general manager, executive assistant/office manager, and creative services manager distributed literature on job shadows, internships and job descriptions for industry positions.  Interacted with students and demonstrated the SEU’s expanded website technologies, e.g., streaming video, advertising and access to program information.

2

Internship Program

Our SEU hosts internship programs throughout the year to develop talent and interest in the industry while providing students with practical work experience.
During this reporting period, we hosted interns:

  • Fall 2006 - 3 U. of O. students and 1 LCC student  interned in News Department
  • Winter 2007 – 6 U. of O. students interned in News Department and 2 Springfield High School students interned in Marketing (Sales Department)
  • Spring 2007 – 6 U. of O. students interned in News Department (5 General; 1 Sports) and 2 students interned in Marketing (Sales Department)
  • Summer 2007 – 5 U. of O. students interned in News Department (4 General; 1 Sports), 1 OSU student interned in News Department and 1 South Eugene High School student interned in Weather (News Department)

Interns observe and participate in story development and newscast production in many ways, such as gathering facts for assigned stories, recording audio and video and editing material, developing preliminary rundowns, as well as attending content meetings with newsroom personnel.

3

Host events for local educational institutions or community organizations relating to broadcast careers

Our SEU regularly hosts students considering a career path in television broadcasting.  These one-day job shadows provide participants with an opportunity to work along-side seasoned professionals and observe day-to-day operations in a television workplace setting and see the talents and skills required to perform the various duties and responsibilities.
During this reporting period, we hosted 1 student:

  • On May 10, 2007, a student from Sheldon High School shadowed a newscast reporter/anchor.

4

Participate in Job Fair

On April 8, 2007, our SEU participated in the Lane Community College 2007 Career Fair, “Taking Flight.”  This event is held on behalf of Career and Employment Services, Cooperative Education the Workforce Network.  It provides the students, as well as alumni and community members, an opportunity to speak with companies and organizations about careers in a variety of professions.

SEU participants – Our creative services manager, executive assistant/office manager, IT director distributed literature on job shadows, internships and job descriptions for industry positions.  Interacted with students and demonstrated the SEU’s expanded website technologies, e.g., streaming video, advertising and access to program information.  Discussed broadcast/TV jobs/careers with interested students and answered questions.

5

Participate in activity designed by SEU to disseminate information about employment opportunities in broadcasting

In conjunction with anchors from other local TV stations, SEU representatives from our own news and creative services department worked with students from Pleasant Hill High School to develop a commercial-free, 30-minute feature story entitled, “One Voice:  Media United Against Drugs.”  Students were taught in weekly sessions throughout first quarter 2007 how to interview, develop a story, record good audio, operate a camera and produce a final product for broadcast.  The feature was simulcast April 22, 2007 on local television stations, providing tips on how to keep youth healthy, safe, loved and drug free.

6

Participate in Career Days to disseminate information about employment opportunities in television broadcasting

In cooperation with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the Springfield School District our SBU participates in a number of Career Fairs in the Springfield community.

  • On March 6, 2007, Springfield Middle School - Meteorologist Joseph Calbreath conducted three, 13-minute presentations on TV news and how it is changing with the advent of the internet, the use of web pages, cell phones, and news delivery methods.
  • On March 2, 2007, Agnes Stewart Middle School - Meteorologist Joseph Calbreath conducted eight, 22-minute presentations on weather and television news, emphasizing the web’s new role.
  • On March 20, 2007, Briggs Middle School - Meteorologist Joseph Calbreath discussed career fields, new technologies in the media and the skills required.  Answered questions from students.
