EUGENE, Ore. - Nathan Hampton first picked up a tennis racket at 3 years old.

Now a sophomore at Churchill High School, he's one of the best players in the state.

Last week against South Eugene, he had to grind out a win in three sets, a grueling match that was all about composure.

Now 15, Hampton said he lets the seniors on the team take the leadership roles, but he still feels like he has a lot to give.

Despite his smaller frame, Hampton's racket packs a punch as he forces his opponents to be on-point at all times, never giving them a break.

Last year, Hampton was eliminated in the semifinals of the state playoffs. This time around, his coach, Steve Hirons, said it's about staying patient and knowing when to attack.
