Prep Athlete of the Week: Austin Crowson

MONROE, Ore. - In last week's 2A state title baseball game, Monroe junior pitcher Austin Crowson was faced with adversity.

Tied at 1 in the top of the 7th inning, a routine groundball turned into an error.

"You can't worry about something that happened," he said. "You can't worry about the last play, you have to keep just going."

And keep going he did, striking out 11 and giving up just four hits on the way to a state championship.

If there was anyway Crowson's performance could have been overshadowed, this may have been it: tied up at 1 in the bottom of the 7th, Monroe's Zach Gwillim - subbed in to pinch hit for the first time in the postseason - stepped to the plate and hit a walk-off game-winning homerun.

"He crushes the ball and I just - I knew he was going to put one over for some reason" Crowson said.

It was the first state title for the Monroe Dragons in 33 years.
